Process of Screeding a Floor

 Surface Preparation
  • Clean the subfloor surface by eliminating dust together with debris, and oil, as well as loose materials.
  • It is necessary to apply appropriate filler or mortar for fixing both cracks and holes.
  • A small amount of dampness on the surface should be applied before screeding when using cement-based screed to enhance bonding effectiveness.
Install Level Guides
  • Set up screed rails or level markers (like metal strips or wooden battens) at the desired height using a spirit level
  • These guides help keep the screed at a consistent thickness.
Mix the Screed
  • Ratio: 1 part cement to 3–5 parts sharp sand.
  • Add water slowly until the mix is semi-dry (like damp sand—malleable but not runny).
Pour and Spread the Screed
  • Start from one corner of the room.
  • Pour the screed between your level guides.
  • Compact the material thoroughly with a trowel or tamping tool.
Level and Smooth (Screed It!)
  • Use a straight edge or screed board ( long aluminium bar) to drag across the top of the screed, using the guides as support.
  • Move the bar in a sawing motion to level the surface.
  • Fill any low spots and repeat as needed.

Curing

  • Cover the screed with plastic sheets, damp burlap, or curing compounds to prevent drying too fast.
  • Cure for at least 7 days (longer for thicker screeds or poor drying conditions).

Drying Time

  • Allow minimum 1 day per mm of screed thickness (up to 40mm), and longer for thicker sections.
  • Moisture testing may be needed before laying flooring (especially vinyl or wood).
